Fertile Window 101: When Are You Actually Most Likely to Conceive?
The fertile window is a 6-day stretch each cycle when conception is possible. Here's the science of timing, and how to identify your peak fertility days.
If you're trying to conceive, understanding your fertile window is the most important thing you can do.
The 6-Day Window
Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. The egg lives for roughly 24 hours after ovulation. That gives you a 6-day fertile window each cycle — the 5 days before ovulation and ovulation day itself.
How to Identify It
- Basal Body Temperature (BBT): A slight rise of 0.3-0.5°C confirms ovulation has occurred. - Cervical Mucus: Becomes clear, stretchy, and egg-white-like during peak fertility. - LH surge: Ovulation tests detect the hormone spike 24-36 hours before ovulation. - Cycle tracking apps: Femcare combines all of the above into one personalized prediction.
Peak Fertility Day
The day before ovulation is typically the highest-probability day. Femcare's algorithm pinpoints this with a gentle 'Peak fertility today' notification.
